Leucine and L-Leucine

“Leucine is a Branched Chain Amino Acid (BCAA). Sometimes you may hear it called the “primary” amino acid because it greatly impacts muscle growth. Leucine also happens to activate mTOR which in turn can increase muscle protein synthesis.

In many studies which are done, Leucine is added to an individuals diet post-meal. This then shows the effect of leucine on post-meal protein synthesis.

Leucine can be found in many sources such as protein powders and BCAA supplements.

“Leucine is an amino acid that is used by the body mainly for building muscle and providing energy. It’s widely used to improve strengh during exercise and muscle recovery times, which makes it a popular supplement among athletes and gym members. However, overconsumption of leucine does more harm than good.”

Recommended leucine doses around 50mg per kg of body weight will work for most people, and for serious athletes an upper limit of 500mg per kg of body weight should not be exceeded.

“Leucine is an amino acid which was discovered in its impure form in cheese back in 1819, and just a year later – in its crystalline form from muscles and wool. This amino acid got its name from the Greek word leukos, which means “white”, since at that time the purification of the substance in question from natural to a white, crystalline state was considered to be noteworthy. Only in the end of the 19th century the structure of Leucine was established by laboratory synthesis.
