So you’ve finally decided to start living a “healthier life”, or maybe you’ve been doing it for a while and just want to brush up on the basics. It could even be that you still don’t have a preference and are just reading this article for fun. Whatever the case may be, you’re sure to find these essentials of health and fitness informational and applicable to any situation.
What’s the first step? Let’s look at it like a road trip. We know where we are, and we know where we want to be, so now all that’s left is using the map and taking the journey! Health and fitness can be approached in a similar way. The most common way that people measure this is using their body weight, however while this may be a good baseline, it can also be very misleading. Another great way to measure is with body fat percentage. These two metrics allow for the basis of our health and fitness road trip. Let’s ask some key questions first:
- Where am I now? The easiest way to answer this question is to step up onto the scale and weigh yourself, usually best done in the morning. You’ll also want to consider measuring your body fat either by using a digital monitor like the one found here on Amazon or doing a skin fold test with a device like this found on Bodybuilding.com
- Where do I want to be? One of the first things I do when asking this question is stand in front of the mirror and look at myself. When you can visually picture what it is that you are aiming to achieve, the road map is easier to create. Decide whether you would like to gain weight or lose weight, or possibly even maintain the current weight you’re at. Would you like to lower the amount of fat you see, would you like to increase your muscle mass, or maybe you’re looking to achieve both!
- Where have I been before? Sometimes our progress can be best estimated by looking at where we have been and possibly what sort of factors play into the situation. While there are those out there who will argue for or against genetics when it comes to health and fitness, I will venture to say that at time it might hinder or aid our progress, but goals are always achievable when they are set at a reasonable height and are tracked along the way.
- How do I get to by destination? This is the final question we’ll pose here. How are we supposed to get from point A to point B. This is where the planning comes in. Our road map to fitness success will come as we learn more about the Essentials of Health and Fitness.
